Numbering Comments

I have tried searching for numbering comments. I actually found quite a few posts. The problem nothing is working. There is a post that gives instructions on changing the comments.php but part of that is no longer in the comments with the new version of WP. Gregs numbering plugin is not working. I have also tried a few of the other plugins and have gotten nowhere. Anyone have any ideas?
