Is it permitted to change footer ?

Hi,

Is it OK to change the footer i.e remove the link to wordpress, change studiopress link to an affiliate link and remoe the login / logout link and add a bit of text php .

Just wondering as some other themes I have used have self destucted when I have removed links!
