Default Post templates

Went through all the forum posts, read the info, but still having trouble setting a template for specific posts. I want to make some posts full-width and am looking for a way to call in a modified template. Found out index.php replaces single.php etc.

Tried Custom Post Templates plugin, got it working, but cannot get it to "see" modified template. That code is ok I think:

<?php
/*
Template Name Posts: Full-width
*/
?>

and so forth. Any advice on the best way to do this?
