Category /archive summary format and limit

Is there a way to limit the number of characters shown in the post summaries from the archive (when the user clicks on a category link etc ...? Also, much of the formatting seems to be lost from what's in the post, no bullets, returns and so on.

I tried adding this to archive.php but it didn't have an effect. <?php the_content_limit(80, ""); ?>
