Home configuration

I`d like to know what I can do to costumit the home using a different colour for every different zones of the home.
I supponse it can be found in the styles.css... I've created differents titles for different sections <h3></h4>... But, as I try to go on, the figure or number does`t work any more, and it seems to get deconfigurated.
