All categories have disappeared

I've been trying to get another site up and going and was changing some of the style sheet for colors etc and I noticed that the headline bar shrunk down and categories disappeared.

I just noticed now that on our other sites exactly the same has happened - it's as iff all the content has just been taken away, categories etc have all gone. I can see how I might have made a slip with the site I was working on, but whatever has happened has affected three other sites as well. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened?

It looks like we just lost several weeks of week and I haven't a clue what has happened.

-- I meant to add that on each of the installations I've also lost the ability to actually display categories under the options page.
