Default Resolution Width Setting

The theme came with centralized width settings and I would like to change to to like 95% so that it would be compatible with any resolution depth be it a laptop or whatever.

Can this be done and how would I do it exactly if you might give me some advice?

If this is possible, are there any negatives?

Thanks in advance! :-)
