Menu Drop Down Disappears

Hi, We are getting complaints about our drop down menu functionality. When you mouse over the menu and it drops down, the boxes disappear as soon as you move the mouse down to select something. It looks like there are several plug in options that might help, can you advise if one works better than another and/or if there is a good fix?
Also it doesn't look like the upgrade 2.9.1 offers anything for this particularly problem but is it a good idea to upgrade as well? Thanks
