Only list of x amount of recent articles on Home page

I have a client who wants to temporarily eliminate the tabber and two category boxes below the secondary horizontal news items, and instead just list a certain number of the most recently articles from all categories including the other formatting, like thumbnail, etc.

What's the quickest way to do this? I'll backup my original HP, but need to symplify it for them until they post more.
