Are post 'pages' created for archives?

Are post 'pages' created for archives?

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm wondering once I have got a lot of posts created, whether the theme will automatically create a paged 'index'? What I mean is, will - after a certain amount of displayed posts - those posts be accessible to viewers in page format rather than as a single page of considerable depth? In short - is there some way to insert a navigation link to earlier posts after a given number of displayed posts? Thanks.
