Default Thumbnails dont resize

I have posted a few pictures to my listing, everything so far seems to be working file (the lightbox for the listings gallery works) however the images are not scaled. Do I need to upload these to size or should it resize automatically. The images appear to be the correct width but the height looks like it is the same as the original photo I uploaded?
So I have a tall skinny image where the thumbnail goes. When I click the image it appears at the correct size.

Do I need to a) resize the images and upload two separate images so I have a thumbnail size and a larger size for viewing?

I have entered the following code in the HTML section:
[gallery link="file" columns="5" size="Small thumbnail"]
