Default Permalink structure

I am trying to optimize my site a bit and have so far added the Permalink structure to be Custom with it defined as:

/%postname%/

The forum mentions something about not using this but rather using /%postname%.html

is a better structure. If I now go in and change this for a site will I get 404 not found errors for all my existing posts?

Is this Permalink structure something that you stuck with once you have set it and started creating posts.
