Display problems in Internet Explorer

I have been building my site in Firefox (on a Mac) and everything looks great but was recently horrified to view it in Internet Explorer and see that it looks awful, with nothing where it should be. I have tried removing some of the widgets to see if they are the problem but that didn't work. Any suggestions please?
