sites been hacked

Hi

I got a strange message when I visited my dashboard on clicked on the permalinks setting....the screen darkened and i then got a message saying I was being watched by the matrix and then it disappeared and nothing happened, and have had no problems since then...

should i start all over again or is there anyway to check if your site has been hacked???

I have never used those unique reference codes you put in the config.php properly...should I go back and change them to something new???
