Default Changing the URL structure

Hi there,

I am a complete newbie. I have seen it is possible to change the structure of the URL that are used by Wordpress.

I wonder about the following:

- Is it a safe operation?
- Will URLs of existing posts be converted?
- Does it apply to postings only or also to pages?
- I need the IDs which are displayed in the URL to define the nav menue includes, if there is no p=123 in the link anymore how can I find out the ID of a page??
- What is best practice?

thanks a lot for your feedback,

Frank
