Can a WordPress user belong to more than one Role?

Hi,

I am trying to do some tricky CMSish-type stuff and I need to be able to assign a user to more than one role. I know there is no way to do this from the Admin control panel but trying to find out if there are any limitations to doing this programmatically.

In the past a user could only be assigned to one role, but I remember there was a lot of chatter about it changing at some point. I just can't seem to find any definitive information on this.
