Multiple categories in the Featured box?

Multiple categories in the Featured box?

Forgive me if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it.

Is there a way to include multiple categories in the home page featured box (not the carousel)? If I put the posts under one big parent category, I lose those sub-categories on the nav bar.
