Excluding posts from category archives

I am attempting to excluded a placesetting post in each category from the category archives.

I am unsure if I should be working in the page_archive or page_blog to make the change.

I have found two sites that might offer the actual how to, but if neither of them look right, I'd definitely like something that works!
