Login Access for Private Documents

Looking for a plug-in or other recommendation that would help provide the following functionality...

Login access (preferably in the sidebar) to give authorized visitors access to private in-house information. This private information consists of 5-10 documents of many types .pdf, .doc, etc.

Presently I am playing with a WP password-protected page called "Log-in" that displays in Church Theme navbar. When visitors click on "Log-In" they are prompted for a password and then the page displays. On the page I was thinking of inserting links to the in-house documents for download. Not sure. Is there something cleaner out there? I'm thinking this must be a pretty common user requirement.

Would like to hear as many options as people are willing to share!
