Default Which is better subdomains or directories?

I am looking at expanding my current site http://daytripplans.com into new cities using 3.0 multi-site feature. Currently hosting on JustHost - not sure if there are support issues with the hosting vendors with this or not.

Are there advantages / disadvantages to the approach in the subject line.

For example for SEO is it more advantageous to have sanantonio.daytripplans.com vs. www.daytripplans.com/sanantonio? Are there other nuances to consider?

Thanks in advance,
Don
