Recent Posts by Category

Hi - I am building up my page content and customising the sidebars to make them contextual to the focus of the particular page. As part of that, I wanted to know if I could adjust the code pertaining to the 'recent posts' so that I might be able to display recent posts relevant to a category - rather than just the most recent post entered under any category. Anybody able to help with that? Thanks.
