Default Category exclusion

Hi there, today is my first today of playing around with Chrome and I seem to have got it all working nicely thanks to the tutorials on here.

My only issue is that I don't like the categories that are created to facilitate the homepage feature content displaying on the category navigation. To me, they are not categories I want users to know they are engaging with.

Has anyone found a good way to hide categories from that nav? I know there are a number of category hiding plugins...

Thanks :)
