Questions on picking a child theme (new customer)

I looking to make my first Genesis purchase. I'm looking over the various child themes and have a couple questions:

1. Can I just purchase Genesis and build from there, without buying a child theme. I think it looks pretty good on it's own.

1a. If I can, where do the customizations go, if there is no child theme? I know I would not want to make changes to Genesis itself, unless I'm misunderstanding something.

2. Are there sources of Genesis child themes on the web, beyond what I see on the site here?
