The "How to Setup the Blog Page Template" tutorial did not work for me.

I want the home page of my blog to show all of my latest posts in order with the newest on at the top along with thumbnails of the posts.

I thought that tutorial was the answer but it did not work. I don't want another link in my nav bar, I want my home page to be all posts and not in categories. how do I do that?
