Default Google Analytics?

I have been trying to figure out what works best when using Google Analytics and would like to get some feedback from others on this board. I was just reading a question that was posted earlier on this forum about placing the Google Analytics code in the footer.php.

My question is, is it better to put the code right into the footer.php or is it better to use a plug-in like the google anlytics plug-in? I want to make sure I am getting accurate readings on my websites and not sure if one method works better than the other. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tyy
