Username and Password Login

I understand how wp_loginout() provides membership control to login to the Dashboard - but how do I setup a Username/password scheme that controls access to a website?

I have a client with a site that she wants protected this way. She has no need nor desire to go to the dashboard...just the website.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of the kind of login that you have to enter to get to this StudioPress support site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
