Default Best way to backup sites (and reliable hosting)?

I've recently had a serious issue with HostGator where I lost 2 months worth of content and customization on several sites. I need a more reliable backup source (and more reliable hosting). I've used the WordPress Database Backup plugin, but when reverting to it, it had saved all the post and page content, but not any pictures or theme customization. It reverted all my customization back to the default theme.

Can anyone suggest a better alternative? I've heard good things about the Backup Buddy plugin, but haven't used it.

Also, any suggestions on reliable hosting? I host some sites for clients so that's a consideration as well. Thanks!
