Problem uploading WP files to server

For the last two days I have tried to upload the WP 2.6.1 application to my server following the instructions from the codex site. It keeps failing and I have not been successful in uploading the unzipped files.

Can I upload the zipped download that comes from the codex page and unzip them on my server and then change the wp-config.php file?

Other solutions? It can't be this hard- they say it only takes "five minutes".
