Taking the /category out of Category links

May sound a little confusing however I am looking to remove category out of the category links. for instance if you have a category named work and someone clicks on the category, it will be displayed

sitename.com/category/work/

I am looking to remove category so it displays

sitename.com/work/

the one plugin I have come across is - Top Level Categories

however this seems to be out of date

any solutions, please?
