Setting up my site locally

Hi,

I wd like to work on my existing sites on a localhost (my computer). (Want to try some new things and if it goes down, that's ok!) I'm kind of confused about how to do this. I see the instructions at WP.org but they apply to a brand new site, creating a brand new database, etc.

I have backup WP/SP files for an entire site plus the backup of the database. I placed those files in user/myname/sites/wordpress. I downloaded the latest MAMP. But how do I get MAMP to see the existing site?
