Permalink question / article opinion

Was recommended in a tutorial to use custom permalink structiure like:

"/%postname%” or “/%category%/%postname%”

Came across article that gives the opinion that this is a mistake/does not give the best results. Would like to hear from anyone knowledgeable on the topic. The article is here:
