Replace Cross Or Just Delete Icon

I'd prefer to replace cross icon with "nothing" and wonder if I need to create transparent gif file 16x16 ? or can I just delete code that's in there? If I choose to create a new icon, again the size would be 16X16 and just replace code in ico file?
