Replacing default header with banner ads

How can I remove any content from the header section and replace it with a PHP script which loads banners? (It would be even better to widgetize it)

I am aware of the howtos on setting up a custom header

I found them interesting and helpful.

But how can I _replace_ the header with a custom script or some other content? It's such a great place to put banners in!
