New "stuff" in (category) after post?

I know my subject line is as clear as mud, so I'm attaching an image that illustrates what I'd like to do.

At the bottom of each post (below the comments) I'd like to include one new item from each of x categories, along with the associated thumbnail (similar to the home.php sections). I would probably only do this for 3-4 categories, displaying only the most recent item from each.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to do this? Any performance issues? (I use wp-supercache).
