install genesis theme onto existing site

Hi there,
Wonder if someone can help me.
I want to install a Genesis theme onto an existing site but don't understand the mechanics.
Do I simply install WP in the cpanel, then install the theme?
Will the site be OK, or how do I manage it. I read something about setting up a special area to work in - how is that done?
I would appreciate any help
