Exclude Term not Working in Featured Widget Amplified

Default Exclude Term not Working in Featured Widget Amplified
I can't seem to get exclude by term working. I'm trying to exclude by a category "News," then use the widget again in the Featured Bottom sidebar for just the News category. In the widget where I'm trying to exclude the News category, I selected "All Taxonomies and Terms," then in the exclude by Terms field I typed in News. Nevertheless, my posts in the News category still show up. Am I doing something wrong? (temporarily, I'm excluding by ID, after implementing the fix to widget.php mentioned in another thread).
