Default Adding links to top nav

I've removed the date and RSS links in the top nav bar and now want to use that space for an extra nav - Home, Contact, etc. I started putting in hand coded links but they don't go across, they go down. Any tips on code to add in a few links horizontally across the top? Thanks so much. Beth
