Default WordPress Multi-site Configuration

I'm interested in creating an outdoor-oriented multi-site installation of WordPress where I can offer free blogs to people who hunt, fish, hike, camp, etc. using the magazine theme. Looking at the demo is there anyway to pull the content from those child blogs and post part of the content to under say a Hunting tab, Fishing tab, Hiking tab etc.?

Not sure this is even possible without some custom programming but thought I would ask. I'm looking at creating a network of bloggers and displaying part of their entries on the homepage and then linking them to the full post at their blog which would be housed under the main site.

Hopefully I'm making some sort of sense.

Thanks!
