Default .htaccess file missing?

I use bluehost.com for my web hosting, whether for HTML or for Wordpress websites. On my Wordpress installations that are not Studiopress-driven I see an .htaccess file that I can edit for 301 redirects, etc. With my Studiopress website, no .htaccess file is present. I didn't delete it. Is this an artifact of the Studiopress - Genesis / Theme installation? If so, how do I accomplish the things I'd normally do by editing the.htaccess file?
