Blank categories in hpfeatured

All invocations of <?php echo cat_id_to_name(get_theme_mod('anything')); ?> return empty string.

My front page has a number of category boxes (not sure of the correct terminology) all of which are blank (the background color appears as a line with nothing inside).

I did some experimentation and replaced the above php with static text. The text appeared as expected in the title area.

I then tried using <?php echo get_theme_mod('featured_top_left'); ?>. This also returns an empty value.

I've used the Lifestyle theme on other sites but never had this problem before.

Any Ideas?
