Forum, Registration Plugin

I am building site for a client that wants to keep costs down and she has asked to include a forum on the site as well as the functionality to register members. She initially wanted to have the forum a payment required area but now says that she may make that free and have members purchase through events, etc. She also wants the site to have the ability to register members (at this point also for free).

We have chosen the Associate theme.

I have used a forum plugin before but found that it was not being updated so it became useless with later Wordpress versions, etc.

Do you know of a free Forum plugin that will later allow payments to be processed?
Do you know of a low cost but easy and good Forum plugin that does this but will keep the costs down for her?
Do you know of any that can also tie in Registration or do you know about a Registration free plugin that is either allows free or payment option - either also providing back information to the site owner.

I did suggest a Contact Form re: Registration but I assume that would make her put together the information one she gets it so I was hoping for a Registration plugin.

Sorry for all the questions but this client is becoming overwhelmed with the techie stuff behind this.
