User community around WP 2.7 and Rev Pro Media 40

To all:

I run a news website in Arizona, and I would like to build a user community around it. I'd like for subscribers to be able to have their own homepage, user profile thumbnail, and even widgetized boxes that pull in our content and can be prioritized depending on what topics the user likes most. It would also be great if they could submit content.

I realize this is a tall order. I found this plugin:

... but I'm thinking of something a little more advanced. Can anyone suggest a link/links to check out on this topic?
