Using the "Blog" template for blog posts

I'm trying to create a homepage for all the blog posts, this page will sit somewhere in the site and not the homepage. I've created a page called "Blog" and from the template dropdown selected "Blog", when I go into reading settings I choose my blog page for posts.
But viewing the page it just shows the homepage instead, is there something I've done wrong here?
