Default Widget CSS

I don't know if this is a "theme specific" question, i.e., that it has to be address by the them I use or if the answer fits ALL themes.

I would like to add a background color the Recent Posts and Recent Comments widgets a different, lighter shade of color.

Is there a way just to select a certain widget that comes "out of the box" with Wordpress, and add CSS to change the background color.

I tried using Firebug and can change other widgeted areas, but not the Posts and Comments.

Thanks in advance!
