Fatal error on first installation

Just tried to install Genesis and a few child themes for the first time. FTP looked successful but got fatal errors on preview and install.

Running WordPress 3.0.3, only active plugin is Akismet.

I'd appreciate some help figuring out what's wrong. Thanks.

P.S. I searched the forum for similar postings before I wrote this; if I missed the answer, please forgive me and point me to it!
