Default Custom menu widget

Hey guys, I'm attempting to use the WP customer menu widget in the header but I notice that the current page doesn't contain the "active" page html markup, but the Genesis page nav widget does. How can I ensure that the correct class is specified for the current list item in the menu?
Also, I cannot change the font size of the menu when using the WP custom menu. It seems that the font-size css is being ignored, but firebug shows me that it's not being overridden by other styles. Changing the font family, weight etc. all works fine, but font-size is not. I don't understand it.
BTW, I am using the child sample theme.

Thanks in advance.
