Login, Register, Protect Content

I am trying to build a word press site for a friend that wants their members to be able to log-in and see a restricted-access when private information is needed to pass along to members, personalized page of content, links, downloads, PDF files etc. Simple enough in the real world, but quite a challenge in word press, for a newbie anyway.

I just spent the better part of a week trying to figure this out, searching the forums, Google, codex, plugins.. but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Some plugins were way too complex and confusing, some too limited or didn't work on my theme.

Basically, all I need is to protect a link, page, or post. When a member not logged in tries to access the link, post or page it will pop up or redirect to a login where they can also register. The registration page must be able to custom add fields. I don't need to charge anyone for anything. Thanks
