Setting up template for traditional blog posts

Ok, I would like to try and have some traditional blog posts on the site but need to have a new template so that this works correctly. I've had a read up and apparently it's simple, you just change the single.php file as in this guide:

However, we don't have a single.php in this template so the individual post structure is calling from the index.php (?) file?

Can you help?
