adding Categories to the drop down

Sorry, but I'm sure this is a basic question.

I changed the name of 'categories' in the NAV bar ( same line as the logo header_) to Portfolio. When I click on it a drop down menu appears saying Uncategoried. I went into wordpress, and created some new categories which I want appear under the portfolio such as people, places etc.... But it is not working.

How do I do this ?
