sandbox or mamp developer environment

Can anyone provide some guidance on the best way to develop a site locally or online somewhere and then back it up and install to the clients hosting account/domain?

Is there a simple solution? Or is the best option to use mamp

I'm developing more client sites now and want to not always place the site behind their html site or under construction page until it is complete.
